UVA President John Casteen announced the largest donation ever given by an active faculty member. Politics professor and director of the Center for Politics, Larry Sabato, donated $1 million to the University.
The donation comes on the heels of the University's $3 billion fund-raising campaign.
Sabato said more than before does the university need private donations, and challenged others to step up to the plate. "We went through a golden age for several decades where the state really stepped up to its responsibilities," said Sabato. "Unfortunately that age is gone and that means the money really needs to be replaced somewhere and that somewhere is through private contributions. Where will those private contributions come from? Mainly from alumni."
Sabato's wants UVA to become the national leader in adult and youth civic education. The donation will help by permanently establishing the Center for Politics in the historic Birdwood Pavilion, which like UVA was erected in 1819, located off Route 250.
