UVA Alum and NFL Player Found Not Guilty

February 18, 2005

UVA alumnus and NFL football quarterback Matt Schaub had a court hearing for charges of assault and battery. After over three hours, the court deliberated and finally the judge found Schaub not guilty.

Last November, a 19-year-old man claimed the Atlanta Falcon punched him in the face during a fight outside of the Wing Factory on the Corner. The plaintiff's lawyer said that it just didn't make sense for someone of his client's size to challenge someone of the football player's size.

The defendant's lawyer maintained that the 19-year-old was the one who started the fight by yelling and swearing at Schaub.

The judge said that although the witnesses' stories were inconsistent on both sides thanks to alcohol intake, he does not think Shaub was the one who punched the defendant in the face.

If found guilty, Schaub would have faced jail time.
