General Assembly Hard at Work

In Richmond on Friday, February 18th, a bill requiring public schools to notify parents whose children refuse to recite the Pledge of Allegiance died in a Senate committee, with lawmakers worried about the constitutionality of the bill.

And, a House bill requiring public libraries to put software filters on their computers to block pornography also failed to muster enough votes in a Senate committee.

Money to pay for the computer filters was rejected by the Senate Finance Committee, citing the reliability of the filters.

Pilot programs that use cameras to catch red–light runners in several Virginia localities will end July 1st, unless supporters can find a way to reverse action taken by the House committee Friday.

The Republican-led committee rejected several bills to keep the programs alive, saying that it infringes on motorists' rights to face their accusers.

Proponents of the bills said the “photo-red'' technology reduces accidents and saves lives.

A couple of years ago Charlottesville and Albemarle county had sought to be a pilot program, with intentions of installing cameras at 29 and Rio Road, but were denied by the state.
