An ambulance driver fell asleep at the wheel Friday evening, causing the vehicle to flip on its side.
The accident happened shortly after 6pm Friday on Route 20/Scottsville Road. The driver of the private ambulance had one patient and two EMTs on board at the time of the accident.
"The driver stated that he believed he fell asleep, ran off the right shoulder of the road and flipped the [ambulance] on its side. Four people were in the vehicle including one patient," said Albemarle County Police Sgt. Jim Larkin.
One of the on-board EMTs was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The driver was charged with reckless driving.
The ambulance was not operating in emergency mode at the time of the crash. Route 20/Scottsville Road was closed in both directions as crews tended to the overturned ambulance and injured EMT.
