First graders may not think twice about cuts and bruises, but after a special assembly in Greene County, they learned just how crucial it is to be safe riding bicycles.

At the meeting, students at Greene County Primary School asked questions, while speakers stressed "safety first."

Pediatric Neurologist Paul Lyons demonstrated the delicacy of the human brain, comparing it to jello, while Corporal Chris Hockman of the Greene County Police Department shared safety tips.

"One is the bicycle helmet of course," Hockman explained. "Two is if they are just starting to ride, always stay with them. Never leave a child alone. And three, [give them] elbow pads and knee pads because you know they are going to fall over."

At the end of the day, first graders left with brand new bike helmets donated by the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
