Man Charged in Conspiracy to Kill the President

February 22, 2005

Ahmed Omar Abu Ali made an initial appearance in federal court in Alexandria.

Abu Ali was valedictorian of the Islamic Saudi Academy in Alexandria.

Federal prosecutors say Abu Ali joined an Al–Qaida cell in Saudi Arabia in 2001. The alleged Bush plot occurred while he was studying in that country. The indictment says that in 2002 and 2003 Ali and an unidentified co-conspirator discussed plans to assassinate the president, by shooting him or using a car bomb.

The White House had no comment on the indictment.
