Carbophobia! The Scary Truth About America's Low-Carb Craze

We've all seen the low-carb advertisements that promise you'll go from flab to fab in just weeks, but one physician claims living without carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice, and bread area almost as bad for your health as being overweight.

"Almost every major medical, nutritional science based organization in the word all oppose it. Why? Because it encourages the consumption of disease producing substances like saturated fat and cholesterol where as discourages people from eating the healthiest foods," said Dr. Michael Greger.

Dr. Greger is the author of Carbophobia! The Scary Truth About America's Low-Carb Craze and a nationally recognized lecturer on nutrition. He's reviewed 30 years of research about this fad diet and said he knows the truth.

"The truth is that low carb diets are unscientific, ineffective for sustained weight loss and can be just downright dangerous," said Greger.

Some of those side affects range from bad breath to kidney damage or worse. "Those people who followed those diets for a year had forty percent decreased blood flow through the coronary arteries that supply blood flow to the heart that allow it to pump," said Greger.

Still, people are willing to take the chance. "Some of my professors from a previous school are trying it. Supposedly it works. I think most of them are just looking for immediate weight loss programs," said UVA student Kim Lee.

Dr. Greger said weight loss should be gradual and people are wrong for blaming their battle of the bulge on those extra carbs they're eating.
He said there's a simpler explanation. "It's the extra calories people are eating, " said Greger.
