The School Board has been struggling with several issues in submitting a final budget proposal, and city officials are saying the Board needs to hurry up and pull something together that will meet everyone's needs.

"We can't do our budget which is due in mid April, without their budget," said City Counselor Blake Caravati. "This is a mandatory thing, so it's going to have to be a consensus, or a strongly led majority that will carry the policy forward."

In response, School Board members say it takes time to deliver a thorough budget.

School Board Vice Chair Julie Gronlund said, "The budget is incredibly important so it's really worth it to take the extra time to get this right, to build consensus and work through the issues we have."

Board members realize time is an issue and they contend they're doing their best to get it done. "Last night we were hoping to finalize the budget, and we're very close," stated Gronlund.

Mayor David Brown said he's encouraged by the update meeting with the Board. "I heard some good things expressed today. I think the School Board is very aware of their responsibilities. There's some give and take going on, and I think the School Board is up to the task and will come up with a good product."

That product will have to be submitted soon, or the City Council will be forced to take matters into their own hands, something they said they don't want to happen.

The Board has scheduled a meeting Monday evening, March 6th in hopes of hashing out the final budget.
