MLK Day Celebrations Start

Students at Greenbrier Elementary paid tribute Thursday to Dr. King. All grades gathered in the gym to listen to a former Charlottesville principal speak about growing up during segregation.

The younger kids then led the group in singing happy birthday to Dr. King, and of course, no birthday celebration is complete without cake.

And the students did get to make a wish. They wished that Dr. King's dream would always be kept alive.

"I have a few friends that are black and if it wasn't for him then I wouldn't be going to school with them, I wouldn't be sitting next to them, I wouldn't be playing anything with them," said 4th grader Tom Holt.

"He was trying to let black people and white people come together and live in peace instead of living separately in segregation," said 4th grader Wynter Warren.

Greenbrier's Multi–Cultural Committee also presented the school with a framed poster of Doctor King, which will be hung up.
