Governor Tim Kaine proposed on Tuesday to strengthen background checks on firearms purchased at gun shows.
Lawmakers have been taking another look at gun laws since the Virginia Tech Shootings.
Family members of some of the shooting victims attended a news conference with Kaine today at Virginia State Police headquarters in Richmond.
Under current Virginia law, people can buy firearms from private dealers at gun shows without going through a background check.
Last month, Kaine proposed remedies for failings in the state's mental health system that were exposed by the shootings, during which a mentally ill student killed 32 people and himself.
