Charlottesville's Department of Parks and Recreation is helping more people get around town and have fun.

on Thursday, March 10th, Parks and Rec unveiled their new wheelchair accessible van.

They had been struggling to afford the van for their participants of the Therapeutic Recreation Program. With enormous economic help from the area rotary clubs, the struggle is over. The Charlottesville, Albemarle County and Blue Ridge Rotary Clubs raised $21,000 of the $31,000 used to purchase the van.

"I happened to find out that the Recreation Department was having a project trying to get his van and they were falling short of their goal. So we stepped in and picked it up," said Ward Campbell, President of the Blue Ridge Rotary.

Cassidy Taylor, the first disabled person to ride in the van, said it was like being on a rollercoaster ride, as she rolled down the ramp extending from the vehicle.

Before she had to get out of her wheelchair to get into a car, but now, "I don't need to get out of my wheelchair any more," she proclaimed. Now, she said, she can go to more activities.
