Do You Know the National Anthem?

How many Americans actually know the Star-Spangled Banner word for word?

According to a recent Harris poll, only one out of three people.

Jonathan Spivey, the choral director at CHS, says: "I think it's a startling statistic, but I think it's a very true one."

Because of that, the National Association for Music Education (MENC) kicked of a multi-year campaign Thursday, March 10th called the 'National Anthem Project'. The goal was to teach the Star-Spangled Banner through education, performances and tour stops.

The MENC issued this statement about the launch: "Today our country is calling on our music educators to restore America's voice. It is important that all Americans understand the significance of our anthem's history."

John Mahlmann, Executive Director of MENC says, "I think this emphasis about going back and teaching that is really exciting and an important lesson in civics for our students.

In fact, this music teacher has been teaching his students the song throughout the year.

While these students at CHS know the words to the star-spangled banner, some locals we spoke to definitely do not, and needed some help. All of the four people we questioned couldn't sing the song. But as one of the community members, Brad Love noted: "The love for your country really comes from your heart, not necessarily the lyrics from a particular song."
