MS13 is believed to be one of the largest and most violent gangs in the country. Now, 103 of its members have been arrested.
"These arrests take place under a new nation-wide enforcement initiative, called Operation Community Shield," said Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Michael Garcia.
This aggressive sweep, made over the last month, targeted gang members in six cities, LA, New York, Miami, Newark, Baltimore, and DC.
"Operation Community Shield aims to dismantle the MS13 criminal gang by removing members from the streets and from the community," said Garcia.
And even though Charlottesville was not one the places where MS13's presence was the strongest, the Honduran gang was, and still may be, a concern to local police.
"We know just in the past 18 months [to] two years, a tremendous amount of gang-related activity that has begun to take place from the other side of the mountain, in the Shenandoah Valley, that comes down from the Washington DC, Northern VA area. MS13 is a popular group that we've talked about as a law enforcement profession here in the Commonwealth of Virginia," said Charlottesville police chief, Tim Longo.
Those gang members are facing multiple criminal and immigration charges, as most are illegal immigrants.
