UVA President John Casteen gave his State of the University address on Tuesday, March 22.
Casteen spoke of his hope for the Charter initiative, the success of the financial assistance program 'Access UVA', the future of Capital Projects, and the importance of digital scholarships.
He also cited a recent study where the student body placed in the ninetieth percentile among other research universities for academic performance.
The University is not without problems, however--specifically, crime. Casteen spoke of student on student crime and of sexual assault, both of which, he said, have a common link.
"The truth is that there still is violence. We see it in the reports in the weekend police blotter of student on student violence that ought not to occur in a well-ordered community. Virtually all events reported included the use of alcohol," commented Casteen.
The University is continuing to make strides to combat these issues. Most recently, they altered their policies on sexual assault situations.
