Living Wage Campaign: Health Risk for Strikers

February 25, 2012

Supporters of the Living Wage Campaign at the University of Virginia have been a hunger strike for eight days.

The students have vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met. They're asking the university's administration to pay all entry level employees a living wage of $13 per hour.

"We hoped it would never come to something like this,"said striker Hunter Link. "We never thought we'd see day eight."

Three strikers have been advised not to continue with with the strike because of health concerns. The group is scheduled to meet with UVa President Teresa Sullivan Monday morning.

"We just are really hoping that on Monday she can take a step forward, and we can all come together and make our community a better place," said Link.

Striker Emily Filler says, "If the university is not willing to make any steps toward that goal, then we are committed to the continuation of the strike."

As of now, they will deal with hunger pains as they wait for the meeting.
