Mother On Trial For Infant Son's Heat Exposure Death

January 23, 2008

A woman whose infant son was found dead in her vehicle of heat exposure is on trial in Charlottesville.

Raelyn Alene Balfour is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the March 30th death of 9-month-old Bryce Balfour. An investigation concluded the 36-year-old Balfour left Bryce in her car after reporting to work at the University of Virginia.

He was found dead in her sport utility vehicle that afternoon. Based on testimony at a preliminary hearing in June, Balfour's husband usually took the child to day care, but had been in a car accident and was carpooling with his wife that day.

The Greene County woman is being tried in Circuit Court. The jury trial is expected to continue through this week. If convicted, Balfour faces up to 10 years in prison.
