Since Delegate Mitch Van Yahres (D-57) announced his retirement, many Democrats have expressed their desire to take his seat, including UVa professor Peter Sheras.
But on March 28, Sheras announced his desire to not run, citing the unpaid, extended leave from his job as the main reason. Instead he endorsed local lawyer and former Charlottesville mayor David Toscano. Sheras even signed the petition for Toscano to run in the primary.
"David has experience in government. He certainly is qualified. His resume is very good. I think he speaks clearly and well. He is a good listener, which is very important to me and I think he would serve the district well," said Sheras.
The Democratic primary will be held June 14.
