Lt. Gov. and Democratic candidate for governor, Tim Kaine, paid a visit to UVA politics professor Larry Sabato's American politics class Monday, April 4.

He spoke to the class about his campaign, saying he will focus on skyrocketing real estate rates, education, transportation and economic development.

He also said that running for office is not for the faint of heart.

"I tell people all the time, look I'm Irish, I was the mayor of Richmond, and I have teenagers in my house. You're not going to rattle me easily.

But it is going to be a tough race," said Kaine. "One of my opponents started negative radio ads last week. And March is awful early for negative ads. But I told my staff, look, be flattered about it, they don't run negative ads against you if they aren't worried."

Today Kaine called on opponent former attorney general Jerry Kilgore to debate him in central Virginia, and to join in a "rust the people" tour of the state.

The tour will feature at least one debate each month in every region of the state, prior to the Nov. 8 election.

Kilgore has not yet responded.

Kilgore will speak to Sabato's class next Wednesday, April 13.
