Old Tradition, New Place

Friday After Five returned tonight for it's 18th year with a bit of a different look. This season features a new owner and for right now, a new location.

"We have to take what was essentially a construction site and carve out a piece of it, put a coat of paint on it, splash it up a little bit, and make it a festive area," said organizer Kirby Hutto.

The new site at the corner of Garrett and Gleason Streets in the warehouse district will be home to the Friday night tradition until July 29th, when the new Charlottesville Pavilion is scheduled to be completed. In usual practice, proceeds from the event will be donated to various area charities.

"Since the benefits are going to the Music Resource Center, that clearly is fostering kids ability to get into music and make that a real aspiration," said band member David Ibbeken.

With this being the first Friday After Five of the season, the turnout seemed to be pretty good here at the new venue. Everyone that CBS 19/ABC 16 talked to seemed to have mixed opinions.

"We were kind of curious about how it was going to be, but I think how they had to squeeze it in, they did a pretty good job," said resident Allen Young.

"I actually miss it over at the other area but I think it is ok," added resident Becca Field.

"It's very warming and delightful that everyone is coming out and enjoying this," said Deborah Fiero.

But even with the change in ownership and venue, the tradition of community remains the same.

"We have met a lot of people that we haven't seen in months. So you get to get out and see what's going on and it's summer time almost," Young said.
