A local doctor specializing in heart disease will be recognized on Saturday, April 16 during a gala held by the American Heart Association. Dr. Eric Powers, a doctor with the University of Virginia Health Systems, will receive the William "Billy" Gitchell award for his dedication to cardiovascular research. The black-tie event also serves as a fundraiser.

"Our goal tomorrow is to raise $175,000 and we're on track to do that. Plus, other money that we raise here and other communities will fund about $1.4 million in cardiovascular research here in Charlottesville," said Kendall Skeen of the American Heart Association.
