For the fourth year, Charlottesville will join cities around the country participating in UNICEF's Tap Project.
The week of March 19-25, 14 local restaurants will offer diners the opportunity to pay $1 for the glass of drinking water they ordinarily enjoy for free. Funds raised will go to UNICEF's efforts in water starved nations around the world.
The participating restaurants this year are: Aromas, Bang, Blue Moon, Duners, Eppie's, Horse & Hound, L'etoile, Maya, Biltmore, Ivy Inn, BH Old Mill Room, Shebeen, Virginian, West Main.
"These restaurants have stepped forward in tough economic times to highlight an important social and environmental issue that will literally save lives around the globe,” says Gwen Goodkin, a volunteer for the Tap Project.
Last year, local diners purchased over 1,900 glasses of tap water at Charlottesville restaurants during TAP week, providing a huge boon to the local restaurant economy.
UNICEF reports that the lack of clean drinking water is the second largest killer -- and the most preventable cause of death -- for children under five worldwide, causing 4,200 deaths from water-related diseases every day. Just $1 can provide 40 days of clean drinking water for a child.
