Rivanna Water and Sewer Meeting Troubles Residents

Video will be available shortly.

April 25, 2005

Last week's Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority meeting wasn't enough for some Charlottesville residents. They addressed their concerns again today at a public hearing.

"It's really not a water shortage problem, it's a water storage problem," said Linda Gooding, an Ivy resident.

"I'm very concerned that we must keep our water local, not go to the James," said Martha Levering, a Charlottesville resident.

At the same meeting, the 2006 budget brought up trash problems. By next year, the transfer station at Ivy will be at capacity, which means it's going to cost consumers a bit more to throw out their trash; five more cents per ton to be exact. However, they are hoping the city and county will help with the expense.

"We're going to continue to provide the services that we are providing now, and many of them I think the public want us to continue to provide, but we've got to have an agreement on how we're going to pay for those services," said Tom Federick of the Rivanna Sewer Authority.

If you want to get involved, the next public hearing is scheduled for May 23.
