Bed Bugs Biting More People

The old saying, 'don't let the bed bugs bite,' is on a comeback.

Matt Yeager from Brown Exterminating said he receives many more phone calls about bed bug infestations than just a few years ago.

These little bloodsuckers aren't something you want to be sleeping with.

"They have piercing, sucking mouth parts, that pretty much suck your blood," said Yeager.

The bite is painless, leaving welts behind, just like many other bugs. The only real telltale sign of a bed bug is blood on your sheets.

More people are now sharing a bed with these bugs because they are good hitchhikers. With the increase in travel there are more opportunities for these little bugs, which are about the size of an apple seed, to slip into your suitcase and be taken back to your home and back to your bed.

Most people do not even realize they have them.

"Most people pawn if off to a spider bite, or something else, that's biting them while they sleep, instead of a bed bug. So people don't think to look in the places that the bed bugs are hiding," said Yeager.

Bed bugs are flat so they can hide anywhere, including the seams of your mattress, the cracks of your bed frame and the drawers of your night stand. They have even been found in electric sockets.

And if you cannot find them, they'll wait to find you, says Yeager. "Bed bugs can live for a year without eating anything."

Hiring an exterminator is the best way to be sure you have found, and killed, them all.
