Children's Health Museum Closes Door

Video will be available shortly.

May 3, 2005

After 25 years, the UVa Children's Health Museum has closed its doors to students and patients. The museum was started at the medical center to teach children about their bodies, healthy care, and healthy choices.

It also offered a pre-op program for young patients facing surgery. More than 150,000 kids have taken advantage of the educational services. Volunteers say the museum was a great resource for both students and patients.

"They show them that a shot doesn't hurt and they show them all about the insides and how the doctor goes in doesn't hurt anything and just fixes what needs to be fixed and comes out and sews you up," said Program Director for the museum, Chris Coleman.

The Children's Museum will be turned into a patient registration site and the Virginia Discovery Museum on the Downtown Mall will inherit its exhibits. Hospital officials say young patients will still receive educational services.
