Superintendent's Absence Felt

Video will be available shortly.

May 5, 2005

Gertrude Ivory sat-in again for Superintendent Scottie Griffin during the school board meeting. She and Robert Thompson have taken over some of the superintendent's responsibilities after Griffin resigned two weeks ago.

"It's been busy, but Mr. Thompson and I felt that the first thing we needed to do was re-establish some trust and offer a listening ear to our constituents," said Ivory.

Right now there is a commission to assist the school board with the search.

"There are members of the community, members of the school division, of all the constituents in that superintendent search and the guidelines will be developed," said Ivory.

This is the first meeting since Griffin's resignation and much of the public comment blamed the school board.

"Every decision made by this current school board will be met with incredible suspicion until trust has been restored," said Claudia Wizman during the public comment time.

Ivory says she and Thompson are working on this, to make the transitions for the new superintendent as smooth as possible.

"We have met with principals, we have met with the school board to get some charters to get from them as to see which direction to take. We want to ensure that the time that remains for this school year is as positive as possible," said Ivory.

As for the Charter School proposal, the board requested more information and time before voting, which is now set for June.
