Francesa Zavacky has been using a pedometer to track her steps for more than a decade, and what began as a hobby, has now become a habit.
"For me personally, they're very motivating because it makes me more aware of my physical activity throughout the day," said Zavacky, a physical education teacher. "I usually wear it every day, even on my pajamas until I go to bed. I've noticed that it has been going up and I think it really motivates me to take more steps."
About 2,000 steps equals just one mile. While some experts encourage people to take 10,000 steps a day, others say that many steps may not be realistic for everyone.
"What you find when you put a pedometer on is that depending on the length of your legs and the length of your stride, steps may or may not translate into a lot of exercise," said pedometer wearer, Isabelle Schoppa. "So it really is different for every person."
When using a pedometer to keep track of your steps, experts say it's always a good idea to wear it at least a week to develop a baseline of physical activity.
Then, set incremental goals after figuring out a daily average, an average that often comes as a surprise.
"Most people think they do a lot of work, and when you put a pedometer on, your surprised to find out that you really do less than you think you do," said Zavacky.
