A trailer in Albemarle County caught fire and a man and his dog were caught inside. Neighbors are credited for helping to rescue the occupant of the trailer.

The man in his 60's is at University of Virginia's Medical Center suffered from burns after being rescued, but the man's pet was not so lucky.

It happened on the 2000 block of Sequoia Street in Albemarle County. Firefighters from three firehouses responded to a call from the Cedar Hill Mobile Home Estates. Once on the scene around 7:30 in the evening, fire and rescue crews found man in his 60's on a sidewalk in need of help.

"He had burns to the leg, and originally complain of some chest pain which seemed to subside before transporting to the hospital," said battalion Chief Todd Richardson, with the Earlysville Fire Department.

Near the sidewalk and the man was a mobile home in flames--flames so high, neighbors were able to see several feet away.

"When I heard it come across my scanner it was about this high above the trailer top," said Barbara Moon, who saw flames from her home nearby.

Firefighters estimate they reached about four feet above the roof.

The man who witnesses affectionately call "Mr. Moyer" was rescued by several teenagers who were driving near his home at the time. Still inside the trailer was the man's dog, which could not be saved by any of the 25 emergency responders at the trailer park.

"We brought him out of the house. He wanted to go back in for the dog, but we said he couldn't because he was going to burn," said Jon Molnar, one of the teenagers who rescued the man.

The fire at the mobile home melted the skirting of another, and caused a nearby pick-up truck to start smoking. The cause is unknown as the Commonwealth's Fire Marshal continues his investigation.
