John McCain was the only of the remaining presidential candidates to spend primary night here in the commonwealth.

He told an enthused crowd Tuesday in Alexandria he's just about ready to put the primaries behind him and move on to the general election as the GOP nominee.

"As luck, that product of opportunity and industry, would have it, we're approaching the end of the first half of the election on quite an upswing."

According to CNN, McCain now has secured 827 delegates in his bid for the republican nomination; a fact that Matt Smyth with UVa's Center for Politics says puts him right on the cusp.

"It would take some extraordinary event, a huge misstep on his part or something from the national party leaders to really give Huckabee a chance," Smyth explains.

On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton's campaign is slumping following her lopsided defeats in Virginia, D.C. and Maryland.

"They changed their campaign manager, just recently she donated $5 million of her own money into the campaign and she's lost the last half-dozen states," Smyth says, adding that most candidates would be sunk under such circumstances.

Still, despite Barack Obama's recent surge Smyth says he's not yet the winner of the democratic fight.

"Obama really has the momentum, he's carried that momentum forward. They're essentially tied in terms of the number of delegates. They both have about 1,200 out of 4,000 delegates."
