"Our soldiers, our sailors, our airmen are out there supporting our country. We have the freedom to do whatever we want because of the sacrifices that they made," said retired soldier Thom Guthrie.

People joined together in salute of Armed Forces week with a parade marching from Rio Hill Plaza down to Sam's Club. The parade and celebration was a way to show support for U.S. troops around the world. Military members both past and present were appreciative of the support.

"I am glad to see that there are so many people that are involved in giving support to those families with sons and daughters overseas fighting to keep us free," said Fluvanna County VFW commander Gary Kuhns.

"It makes me feel good that people care about the military," said Army Reserve David Buskey.

On this a week for honoring our armed services both at home and abroad, people all around said that they have different reasons for being here.

"So we are here to support our troops and let them know that we are thankful for what they do," Frieda Loose-Wagner.

"It's really warming to see that they give you support and that everybody is caring for you," said Naval Cadet Matthew Workman.

During the ceremony, time was also taken to recognize the men and women of the Charlottesville Fire Department who have served or are serving in the different branches of the Armed Forces in Iraq.

Most of all, the celebration was to say thank you to the soldiers and their families because they give so much for our freedom.

"You don't always want to go. But you know that is what you signed up for, to protect and serve," said Army Reserve Thomas Billie.
