The Fluvanna Sheriff's Office plans on placing 5,000 gun locks in businesses throughout the community. About 1,000 were passed out last year.

Authorities decided to start distributing them again in light of a recent incident at Central Elementary in Palmyra. Guns and a knife were found in the backpacks of two elementary students there on May 6. The Fluvanna Sheriff says he wants to re-enforce the importance of gun safety.

"When we talk about safe but also secure so if a weapon does get in the hand of a child, whether it be a handgun or a rifle or shotgun, we can take some extra measurements to make sure that the weapon is inoperable," said Sheriff Ryant Washington.

Parents and citizens can also pick up gun locks at the Fluvanna Sheriff's office.
