High Schoolers Awarded For Ideas

Video will be available shortly.

May 17, 2005

Last year nearly 160 young people lost their lives on Virginia roads.

Today, young people across the state are trying to stop these numbers dead in their tracks by forming a youth group dubbed "Youth Of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety" or YOVASO.

The group's mission is to develop school programs that address traffic safety.

Madison County high schoolers stood out among other YOVASO chapters and were awarded for their leadership in ideas regarding alcohol prevention and seat belt safety.

"We had a lot of interaction with the younger kids to teach them to buckle up," explained senior Kari Lillard.

Shane Conlon, also a senior, said they are concerned about children's futures. "[We did it] so kids can have safe rides, be safe in cars and grow up to do good things," he explained.

The high school youth group gathered surveys and presented information to younger students. They are sponsored by the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

A number of students, including Kari, were also awarded for hours of community service.
