Previous weather conditions throughout the year are predicted to bring a record number of fleas this summer. The season usually means fun in the sun even for pets. But dog owner, Stacy Kowalccyk, also knows that with the season comes biting little beasts - fleas.

"You're always going to be concerned about fleas cause they bring that stuff into your house," said Kowalccyk.

Apart from being nuisances for humans, experts say fleas can be dangerous for your four-legged friends.

"They can carry parasites and things like that. Tapeworms are actually transmitted by fleas," said Village Animal Hospital vet, Jann Rhea.

There are certain things you can look for, such as scratching, scabs, inflamed skin, and flea droppings, which look like black dirt buried in your pet's fur. Also some ways to keep fleas at bay, for starters, remember the insects mostly live in your pet's environment.

"Bomb your house, vacuum where the dog sleeps and where the egg population is likely to be high," said Dr. Rhea. Washing their bedding is another tip.

Flea collars and baths may also be an option, but experts believe they don't work as well as some other treatments. Vets say that usually the best way to get rid of pesky fleas during the summertime is by topical medications. These solutions usually go in-between the shoulderblades of your pet. Vets also say to make sure to read the directions before applying. These solutions seem to be the answer for many pet lovers.

"We have used it on our other animals, and we've had no reactions to it," said cat owner, Charlotte Goodwin. "I do believe it does help."

However, no matter the method, Kowalccyk is just glad she can get rid of the bloodsucking insects.

"They're going to get them, but you can always get rid of them though. That's the best thing about it," she said.
