Candidates Discuss Issues

Video will be available shortly.

June 9, 2005

One of the races squaring off on June 14th was on center stage tonight in the Charlottesville City Council Chambers. The four men running for the 57th District representative slot were on display tonight.

The candidate forum was sponsored by the Sierra Club and featured candidates Rich Collins, Kim Tingley, David Toscano, and lone Republican Tom McCrystal. The forum dealt with such issues as urban sprawl, greenhouse emissions, and cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay.

"Once you get it in your mind that it is very expensive to clean things up after you once contaminated it, whether it is the air, the water, or the land, then you begin to think that maybe we are not doing things generally the way it ought to be done," said Rich Collins.

"The only way that you're really going to do it is to find reliable sources of funds that are built into the state budget to get these things done," said David Toscano.

This was the final forum as the candidates march towards Tuesday's primary. All four candidates are vying for the seat of outgoing representative Mitch Van Yahres. Van Yahres has been in Richmond for 24 years.
