Traffic is still shut down along an Albemarle County road after a deadly accident this afternoon. It happened on Gordonsville Road, just past Cismont around 3 p.m. this afternoon.

Police say the driver of the Green Mazda Protégé was traveling westbound when he swerved to avoid a car backing out from a driveway. He then lost control of his car and crossed into the median, hitting a commercial van head-on.

The driver died at the scene; the two in the van were taken to UVA hospital.

"We're going to have an accident reconstruction team that will be here. A specialist that will come down and will collect the evidence, and will attempt to reconstruct the accident," said Lt. James Bond with the Albemarle Police Department.

Police have not released the name of the driver, they have not determined whether any charges will be filed against the driver who backed out.
