Today, UVa Medical School students said goodbye to classroom study and hello to patient care.

147 students celebrated completing their second year of medical school courses and begin their third year, which consists of a series of clinical rotations in major medical specialties.

Officials said the ceremony emphasizes the importance of humanism in the practice of medicine.

"The students generally feel that this is the light at the end of the tunnel. Students generally don't much like the first two years because they’re stuck in the classroom, stuck in the lab, noses in books all day. Now, they finally get to spend all day long working with patients, with real doctors and nurses and other health care professionals," said Christine Peterson.

Three UVa residents also received checks for $250 for their humanism and excellence in teaching medical students.
