It was a night of good-byes for some city School Board members last week, but Thursday was a night of welcomes as the City Council made their selection of who sits on the board.
The City Council has made their mark by saying welcome to three new School Board members.
The selection process began just two days ago inside the basement conference room of city hall. There, council-members were able to interview twelve candidates, to serve as the voice of Charlottesville's education community.
One by one, each candidate stated their case in 20 minute intervals, for making schools better for all our children. Detail by detail, council-members jotted down notes to make a final decision while the public community looked on, taking their notes as well.
Though interviews are standard operating procedures, having the candidates interview in front of an audience is not.
"I really didn't have any problems with that because when you're working with the School Board, and you're working as a representative of the community, part of that is doing things on short notice," explained one nominee.
Nonetheless, councilors hit their mark by appointing Louis Bogard, Alvin Edwards, and re-appointing current School Board member Peggy Van Yahres to serve three years on the Charlottesville City School Board. The trio will begin their terms on July 1, 2005.
Some councilors believe the public interviewing process went well. Candidates believe so too, according to feedback from the candidates following each interview.
