When you walk in to the Virginia Piedmont Regional Science Fair it may bring back some memories, but when you see the projects you can't help but notice that times have changed.
"Does a hands free cell phone still delay your reaction time? So we did our project to figure that out," said Brooke Bochonok, a science fair participant.
"I just thought it would be interesting to do a project on global warming," said Gavin Deane.
There were about three hundred kids from grades six through 12 competing. The cardboard displays look the same but these projects come from the best of the best in the region.
"Going all the way up to King George County, all the way down to Nelson County down South," said Gary Henry, the science fair director.
"I'm from Charlottesville, and I'm from Buford school," said Deane.
"I'm from Stafford, Virginia," said Bochonok.
But Thursday's fair is not about competing.
"Our main objective is to encourage and inspire them to continue their pursuits in science and engineering, hopefully get a degree in that and then choose a career," said Henry.
And as Henry looks to spark interest in these students, some of them look to solve problems that they will face in the future, perhaps even global warming.
"What we could do to reduce it is not, try riding bikes or cycle don't go to your car everywhere, buy a more efficient cars," said Deane.
The local school systems that participated Thursday include the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson counties.
