Another area school system is losing its leader. This time, it's because of retirement. Dr. Kevin Castner with Albemarle County schools made the announcement today.

After working from this office for an entire decade, the man behind the desk is calling it quits.

"After 36 years you reach a point that you have to decide if there's other things in life than just going to work every day," explained Dr. Kevin Castner.

Dr. Castner, the leader of the 26-school system was hit with emotion while making his announcement known to colleagues. Superintendent Castner says it's hard to leave a field he's worked in for so long.

"I've been in public education for 36 years," said Castner. He described the emotional closure by saying it was "reaching a point where you're going to have a closure, talking to the people that you've worked with and spent a lot of good quality time with. It was pretty emotional today."

The thing Dr. Castner says he'll miss the most is the work. As his colleagues already know, the superintendent is very committed to the public schools, school board, and whole education community.

"It's been something that's been my chosen profession, and the work itself is something that I've found rewarding," Castner said.

In return, the Albemarle County School Board thinks highly of him, too.

"He's brought a high level of compassion and commitment to his job, and he was able to spread that around," said one School Board member.

The school system says Castner's leadership has been strong and consistent, and they are fortunate to have had him at the helm. With his clear vision, passion, and integrity, he's positioned Albemarle County as a leader in state-wide education. The school also adds, Castner's legacy will be tremendous.

With the Albemarle County school superintendent announcing his plans to retire at the end of the school year, both the city and county are now looking for a new school leader, and the school board members have to select from a thinning pool of candidates.

Dr. Castner's last day is December 31st, and Assistant Superintendent Dr Pam Moran will fill in until a replacement is named.
