The City of Charlottesville, and outlying area were greet with severe thunderstorm around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon.
Wind gusts were reported to exceed 60 miles per hour, and were accompanied by lightning, and bits of hail.
The Charlottesville Fire Department answered about 90 calls from the beginning of the storm until the storm's end. Fire officials estimate around 10 buildings were heavily damaged by tress and fallen power lines. Thousands of people were dealing with power outages, but none of them were injured.
The University of Virginia also had property damaged. The grounds have lots of debris scattered across the area.
Several people say they saw a tornado, or some type of funnel cloud, but it could not be confirmed. The National Weather Service is the only agency authorized to give confirmation of a tornado.
