The race for governor is heating up. In fact, a recent poll shows that the Democratic candidate, Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine, and Republican candidate, former Attorney General Jerry Kilgore, are in a dead heat.

The July Mason Dixon poll has Kaine leading Kilgore by one percentage point, well within the margin of error.

In an interview at Good Morning Charlottesville, Kaine said he is not surprised by the polls and sees it as evidence that his campaign is gaining momentum. He stated that a year ago, Kilgore had the lead and now he instead is pulling ahead.

In response to a question regarding the burden of property taxes, especially those felt in Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Kaine proposed his Homestead Exemption, in which "local governments have the ability to target all relief effort at homeowners."

Kaine also described his "Start Strong" program, in which children all across the state would be given the opportunity to attend Pre-K classes. Kaine said this was integral for closing the achievement gap, prevalent in Charlottesville, since research shows ninety percent of children's brains are developed before the age of five.

GOP candidate Jerry Kilgore will also appear on Good Morning Charlottesville this Frday, August 19.
