Thousands of local students in need do not have to worry about school supplies this year. It's all because of the Salvation Army's annual School Supply Drive.

The organization started shopping Tuesday, having collected about $8,000 in money and supplies over the past several weeks. With a 10% discount from K-Mart and Office Depot, the Salvation Army picked up much needed back-to-school items, which will help about 2,000 children.

"So many wonderful organizations in the community, so many other churches, and so many individuals have been so kind to give and for that we're so very, very grateful," said Major Bruce Smith with the Salvation Army.

CBS19 and our sister station ABC16 were proud to help and collected 150 backpacks for the drive. That's also thanks to money donated from individuals and companies such as Five Star Industrial and Business Supply - who helped us reach our goal.
