It's what many had feared. Hurricane Katrina has not only caused monumental damage, but it is now responsible for several deaths.

Tuesday morning, officials confirmed 55 people were killed in Mississippi-- many of them from one apartment complex in Biloxi alone.

Like a heavyweight fighter, Hurricane Katrina unleashed her fury, directing her most serious blows toward Louisiana and Mississippi. It was obvious from the start, the 'Big Easy' was going to get a big hurt.

Katrina landed as a category four hurricane shattering windows, peeling away walls, and causing widespread flooding across the Central Gulf Coast.

Despite the warnings, some chose to ride out the storm at home, something they quickly regretted.

"With the wind blowing that way, It was pushing the water up into the house, so it was beyond devastating," said a resident of Biloxi, Mississippi.

Many of Biloxi's Antebellum homes are now just memories, and memories are all these people have.

"This was a beautiful street and now it is gone. It is amazing... It's like someone dropped a bomb," said another resident of Biloxi, MS.

Dave Staley's home was no match for Katrina.

"It just broke in half and floated away," said Dave Staley, a homeowner in Biloxi, MS.

"Camille wasn't this bad. I'll tell you that. Not this bad. Not in this part of town. Not even close," added Staley.

Some here thought nothing would ever compare to Camille, but it did, in a cruel twist of fate.

The area isn't expected to be safe for days, and state officials have asked all residents not to return home.

Both the airports, New Orleans International and Gulfport-Biloxi International, have grounded flights until their respective officials can assess the damage.
