Thousands Volunteer To Aid Hurricane Katrina Victims

Video will be available shortly.

August 31, 2005

Another day for folks along the Gulf Coast to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as much of New Orleans appears to be underwater and Biloxi appears to be lost.

The American Red Cross has thousands of volunteers mobilized to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

This is the largest single mobilization that the American Red Cross has done for any single natural disaster. Hundreds of people are being plucked from the roofs of their homes by the coast guard, and are being taken to higher ground. An estimated 10,000 people have been holed up in the damaged Louisiana Superdome since the storm passed through on Monday. Here's one man who tells why he waited the storm out.

"I work for the sheriff in 'Orleans Parish, and I was afraid if the water wasn't high, I'd have to go to work. We decided to ride it out, and it was a bad mistake," said a resident of New Orleans.

Many are thinking just like that man, never to wait out a storm again.
