Charlottesville Fire Department Aids in Katrina Relief Efforts

Video will be available shortly.

August 31, 2005

Relief efforts from around the country continue to pour into the areas devastated by hurricane Katrina. On Wednesday the Charlottesville Fire Department sent off one of their own satellite trucks. The truck is somewhat like a mobile telephone booth. It can provide satellite communications, telephone services and internet access. It's a great asset to agencies who might have difficulty communicating otherwise.

"They could actually go to a place of total devastation and set up communications which could be used for emergency service operations, or it could be used for as simple as allowing loved ones to contact their relatives and let them know they are ok," said Chief Charles Warner of the Charlottesville Fire Department.

The department plans to send at least six more firefighters to the hard-hit areas over the next few days.
