Our rivers may be getting cleaner as limits are being placed on the amount of nutrients in the water.
Water officials met tonight to discuss the new Moores Creek permit, because the old is currently operating expired. The new sanctions focus on monitoring the nitrogen and phosphorus much more frequently than before. The only problem is the cost, which officials say grows the longer and longer it is delayed.
"We have a moral commitment to clean up the bay, it's just a really high price tag on our moral commitment," said Liz Palmer who organized the event. "The estimate right now, for just infrastructure changes are $25 to 30 million. That does not include maintenance."
That figure is just for Moores Creek Facility. The cost for the whole watershed is an estimated $1.2 billion.
