UVA Groundbreaking for New Research Building

Video will be available shortly.

September 16, 2005

The University of Virginia will soon have a new place to do medical research.

Today faculty and guests broke ground on the Carter-Harrison Research Building, along Crispell Drive. The five-story structure will house laboratories, research support, and office space for medical investigators. The research is set to deal with cancer, immunology, and infectious diseases. UVA officials say the building is needed because right now, they're out of lab space.

"This building will absolutely allow us to put the appropriate amount of space with these outstanding investigators," said the Dean of UVA School of Medicine, Arthur Garson Jr. "This is the absolute best thing that's happened in a long time for the school of medicine."

The building is expected to be finished by summer 2008. Its projected cost is just over $70 million.
