Quick Storm Causes Damage

Video will be available shortly.

July 21, 2005

A quick moving storm tears through the area leaving residents without powers and in one case, without a roof.

"I have never seen anything like that. It scared me to death," said Colin Gibson.

Colin Gibson is cleaning up tonight after his trailer was hit by this gigantic tree. He had just got home at the time the storm came barreling through.

"It hit, I heard stuff hitting the trailer on the back side, branches and all kinds of stuff. I looked out the window and I could not see nothing," he said.

As has become the trend this summer, a fast moving storm rocked the Charlottesville area sending trees falling and knocking out power to several areas. Lights were out along Seminole Trail forcing officers to direct traffic.

"This year it seems like we are getting a few of them. They hit and run and leave us running for several hours and then everything calms down again," said North Garden Fire Captain Bill Strother.

This latest storm came tearing through the area around 5:30 p.m. It left a trail of uprooted trees in the Ivy Area. But it appears the hardest hit was Gibson's home.

"It must have cracked the roof open because I have a couple of leaks in the ceiling. I probably have about five gallons of water in the bucket I caught," he said.

"I would probably say it is at least about 80 feet. Quite a few limbs on it so it is going to be a fun mess to clean up," Strother said.
