The "Virginia Big Tree" database is being updated this summer and some local trees might make the cut.
The Virginia Big Tree program measures and keeps track of the largest tree of each species.
Currently Virginia boasts 55 national champions, nine of which are in Albemarle County.
Tuesday's program officials re-measured a champion tree on Monticello's West Lawn, something they feel is important they continue doing.
"This program helps to promote the awareness of how significant trees are in the urban environment, and it creates awareness of how important they are in managing storm water and stuff like that," says Stephen Jordan with the Virginia Big Trees Program.
If you would like to nominate and/or view current and fallen champion trees, you can visit www.cnr.vt.edu/4h/bigtree for more information.
