April 13, 2008

The Charlottesville Pavilion saw a celebration of Monacan Indian culture through dance Sunday afternoon.

Children in the Monacan Indian Youth Dance Group danced in traditional colorful outfits. Over 1400 people are part of the Monacan nation which includes Richmond and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The event was sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and the Virginia Discovery Museum.

"There are going to be educational programs about Monacan culture including beading and other works at the museum," commented Gabriela Vallejo.

The Virginia Discovery Museum will have their exhibit on Jamestown and Monacan Indian culture until May.
