A pediatrician accused of trying to kill his baby daughter sits in jail awaiting sentencing.

Friday a judge found Dr. Iain Gainov guilty of one count of felony child abuse and neglect. He was found not guilty of five other abuse charges.

Dr. Gainov said nothing as he left the courthouse in chains this afternoon. His lawyer also had no comment.

The pediatrician was found guilty of willfully committing serious injury to his infant daughter Megan.

"We are satisfied with the outcome," said Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Cynthia Murray.

The Commonwealth provided an audio tape of a conversation between Dr. Gainov and his wife Colleen where the doctor admitted to irrigating Megan's nose several times on the day she was rushed to the hospital with life threatening seizures.

During the trial with the Commonwealth demonstrated how Dr. Gainov filled the bulb with water and repeatedly flushed the baby's nose leaving two cups of water in her system and the baby in critical condition.

"In fact, he indicated by his own statement to his own wife that he knew he wasn't supposed to do it on infants but he did it anyway," said Murray

The doctor told his wife he was trying to relieve Megan's congestion so she would eat better. In another recorded conversation between Dr. Gainov and his wife, Colleen said she was filing for divorce and the grounds were "this feeding thing."

"Remember that our primary focus is not only the protection of the baby in this case, but also the protection of other children. This man was a pediatrician, and so we are cognizant of the fact that [if not convicted] he might have the opportunity to treat other children and we were very concerned about that," said Murray.

Dr. Gainov was convicted and the Commonwealth said he will not be allowed to practice medicine in the United States.

Gainov's sentencing is scheduled for December 21. He faces 2-10 years in prison.
